Using smaller-than-room-size rugs to highlight particular areas in a room can be challenging if not daunting, due to several subjective factors that affect the choice of rugs and their placement. Placing a large rug in your bedroom will probably get covered up by the bed. This may make it difficult to keep cleaned and vacuumed.

Placing a rug in front of a bookshelf or fireplace can mean instant decor. Adding a simple rug can give the area personality and color. Use a light color to brighten up the area if it is not a high traffic area. If it is high traffic you will want to use colors that are dark and won’t show dirt as easy. Oriental rugs are highly recommended when using a rug to enhance an area.

Also, select a rug of hardy materials that can sustain heavy usage when placing it where human traffic is high. Machine-made rugs are less sturdy than handmade ones, and darker colors or tones are preferable. They show traffic patterns less obviously.
