PostHeaderIcon A Raised Bed Vegetable Garden For Growing Earlier Crops

If you live in a cool climate area the best way to grow your favorite vegetables is to have a raised bed vegetable garden. In those areas of the country where the climate is cooler, a spring rain can cause regular vegetable gardens to become wet and cold for far too long.

Maintaining a raised bed vegetable garden is a smart option. A raised bed allows extra water to drain off quickly, and helps soil to become warmer in a shorter time. Under certain circumstances, a raised bed garden can allow you to grow vegetables earlier in the season than you might otherwise be constrained to do.

A raised bed vegetable garden is ideally suited for many vegetables as it affords extra room for plants to grow deep, sturdy roots. The extra depth allows the plant roots more room to grow and become stronger. This has the benefit of producing sturdier plants which will yield better harvests.

To construct a raised bed vegetable garden you need to pile in the soil with a shovel or rake. The width of the raised bed depends on how large you desire the garden to be. A common dimension is 21 inches. The dirt that is used for the beds has to be a superior quality soil. It is acceptable to use common garden dirt that has been mixed with amendments such as compost, peat moss, and manure. Also, you can buy superior quality soil.

Wooden frames can be used in vegetable gardens or for small projects, to help hold in the soil. These frames can serve as space organizers and can be aesthetically pleasing. Make sure they are tough, however – as they must withstand insects and different weather conditions. Weather treated wooden 2ins. x 10ins. or 2ins. x 12ins. rails are readily available in home center or garden stores.

You can use containers (like tires) to grow your vegetables in as an alternative to building a raised bed vegetable garden. In these different containers the soil will still have the ability to get rid of the excess water quickly and to dry up faster. Tires are a great container because they absorb the heat in the morning and radiate it off at night. This helps to keep your plants warm.

You don’t want your plants to be too wet or dry out too fast. As you prepare your soil, be on the lookout for low spots which could drain too slowly. If you spot any, be sure to add extra soil to build the level up. Even then, the depth can change with your first watering. Continue to build up low spots where you will plant your vegetables until you have a nice level spot for your plants.

PostHeaderIcon Should You Use The Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter?

The topsy turvy tomato planter is revolutionary way to plant your vegetables but is it the right choice for you?

Lets start with why it works. The topsy turvy tomato planter can be used for most any vegetable that you would like to grow. Because of the design where the plants are upside down it is said that the nutrients will go down into the vegetables, making them larger and more abundant, but would you fair better with the topsy turvy as opposed to growing your vegetables the traditional way?

Are you limited in how many plants you can grow due to space restraints?

Where the Topsy Turvy really shines is in its ability to save you space. If you have a limited space to work with or if you just want to grow more vegetables then your garden holds this is a way that you can do that.

Since they are up in the air, the ability to hang them anywhere is present. You could hang them in your yard, on the deck, or even inside of your home. Just make sure if you hang them in the house that you have a catch basin for the extra water that will collect when you water your tomato plants.

Do you have somewhere that is strong to hang your topsy turvy tomato planter?

When you hang your topsy turvy planter you will need to have a good support system. At the hanger top weight, it could weigh up to 70 pounds with the wet dirt, roots, and vegetables. If you neglect the proper support it could fall, possibly hurting your plants.

To make sure that it is properly supported, switch out the hooks it comes with with a heavier grade hook. One that can hold up to 80 pounds or build a wooden frame to hold your planters.

If you have a great place to hang your topsy turvy tomato planter, you can save a lot of time, space, and energy while growing yourself a plentiful crop that you might not otherwise have.

A great idea is to set a budget for each child’s presents. Have them ask if they would like one big present from Santa or a bunch of smaller ones. This is great for older kids who will by now know that Dad is Santa. But it also applies for any parent buying presents.

Come up with great traditions that cost little or nothing. They can be anything as long as it involves some sort of activity that allows your family to spend time together. For example an interesting idea would be to do a large puzzle with your children. You can choose one that will take a while to complete preferably until Christmas. Then on Christmas Day you can start a new puzzle that will last you until the next year. It can also be simple things like a special Christmas breakfast or dinner. These are traditions that won’t cost much more than normal and will become great memories for you and your family.

PostHeaderIcon 5 Great Xmas Toy Trends

This holiday season many companies are looking for ways to offer affordable items for Christmas gifts. This allows many customers who may not have as much disposable income to spend this season to still be able to get great presents for their family members. This has also produced some interesting toy trends for the holiday season. Many are tied to cutting cost while some introduce new concepts to attract customers. The whole point of presents for Christmas 2009 is to give something that will have good value for cost and also be affordable. Here are some of the trends to look out for this year.

The return of comfort toys is a major trend for this holiday shopping season. These will be classic favorites that have been around for a while and are relatively affordable and easy for most people to purchase. For example these are toys such as Mr. Potato Head, Etch and Sketch, Bop It and other popular toys that are not necessarily high tech or advanced but are still the favorites of children everywhere. Comfort toys can also be labeled recession proof toys. These are toys that in good times and bad that families could get and be assured that there would not be much disappointment on the part of the children. So if you are wondering what would be a good substitute for some of the items on your children’s wish lists this is a great place to start looking.

Learning toys are going to be very popular for parents with young children. One of the things that parents will be looking for toys is items with added value. Learning toys fit this requirement because they are not only fun toys for young children to play with but also great learning and education aids. These toys help to teach children basic skills such as counting, spelling, reading, and arithmetic. Some toys like the Smart Cycle or Vtech learning computers have interchangeable software. This allows for endless fun and learning for your kids. This will be sure to make purchasing learning toys a smart investment this Christmas.

Mini versions of popular toys are another trend to look for. Many companies want to keep up sales of popular toys, but still want to maintain profits. A solution was to make smaller versions so hot toys such as Zhu Zhu interactive hamsters and smaller versions of toys such as Etch and Sketch will be more prolific this year. This allows you to get presents your kids like and not strain your budget at the same time.

This holiday season you should also look for reduction in the price of video game consoles. Xbox, Playstation 3, and Wii are three game consoles that will be considerably cheaper this season. If you already purchased a console, a great gift idea is accessories. There are many new games that use accessories to enhance game play. A good example is the Nintendo Wii which has new accessory called the Wii motion plus which provides finer control and can be used for Wii games such as Wii Resort.

Another interesting trend is personalized letter from Santa. You can order a special reply from Santa to your kid that will look like an official letter from the North Pole. This is a great way to make Christmas extra special for your children.

PostHeaderIcon Have You Got Hair Like The Supermodels?

You see all those supermodels in the magazines and you want your hair to look just as good as theirs does. But it just doesn’t, and you don’t know how to make it look that good. What you need is some simple tips on how to make your hair look good naturally. You can do it all at home, yourself.

You see getting great hair isn’t an accident. Of course you could always head to the salon, again, and spend up big, again, to see if your hair is going to look great. Maybe change your hair color, again, and pay up big, again….

You see where this is heading? I’m sure you’ve tried all that. You’ve spent the hours and hours at the salon and spent so much money you really are in need of a personal loan to pay for it.

But still you haven’t really got the hair you always wanted.

But there’s even more to worry about. As well as spending up big at the salon you’re also putting your health at risk. Because many big brand salon (and personal) hair care products have ingredients that may be unhealthy. This applies to cosmetics and skin care products and personal and beauty products in general too, as well as hair care products.

The FDA isn’t required to satisfy itself that the ingredients in these products are safe for people to use, and so don’t. So there are some extremely suspect ingredients in many of these products including hair care products.

It’s a dilemma. You want great looking hair but don’t like to use potentially unsafe products. Good news is that there are some great products that you can use and you can also make your own from some simple home ingredients that can make your hair look great, naturally and safely. You need some good natural hair care tips.

It’s quite possible to get your hair looking great safely. There’s many “secrets of the pros” that they don’t want you to know because then you don’t need to keep going back to them and paying up. Of course they aren’t “secrets”, they’re just some simple things you can do at home, yourself. And they work.

But the pros aren’t going to tell you are they? After all, they make their living from you.

But it really isn’t all that hard to do it yourself, at home. And get hot looking hair at the same time. You make your own shampoos and conditioners at home, learn how to do great scalp massages and lots more.

There’s so many natural hair care tips that you can apply at home, yourself. It’s not that hard, you can get better looking hair, safely, at home. Both your hair and your bank balance will thank you.

PostHeaderIcon Solar Lights for the Holidays

For many of us, it is time to begin decorating our homes in preparation for the holiday season. If you are like most of us, you still have the old, traditional Christmas lights that you have been using for years. The Halloween decorations are likely just as old and tired. This may be the perfect time to think about upgrading to solar holiday lights.

Traditional holiday lights are a hassle. You always wind up running extension chords all over the place, burned out bulbs need to be replaced; you have to worry about short circuits due to rain, the huge electricity bills… Yea, it’s a pain. Solar holiday lights completely eliminate those hassles, but how do they look?

Solar lighting technology has come so far in just the last couple of years that manufacturers have release a huge assortment of solar lighting styles – including Halloween and Christmas lights. For Christmas you have options like:

Solar Net Lights – These are basically a “net” of LED lights that you use to wrap a shrub. They light up at night and a sensor turns them of when the sun rises. They stay lit for about 8 hours and require 1 AAA battery that is sold separately.

Solar String Lights – String lights usually come in a string of 50 LED lights. They also come with a sensor that turns them off during the day and back on at night. They are great for stringing along your front porch railing, the eves, in trees and just about anywhere else you want.

Multicolor Solar Christmas Lights – These lights are the multicolored counterparts to the regular string lights. They also have a day/night sensor and usually come with about 50 LEDs.

Blue Snow Flake Solar Lights – These lights are beautiful and can be found very inexpensively. Unfortunately, some people had reported problems with the lights not working after a couple of months, but others have had no issues. They come in a string of 20, and can be found for as low as $7.99, so I will leave it up to you. I do know that the main company that sells them has a very good ranking on Amazon.

If you’re looking for Halloween decorations, you can choose:

Solar Halloween Lighted Carved Pumpkin Jack-o-lantern Decoration – This is a solar power smiling Jack-o-lantern decoration for a front lawn or porch. It is about 8″ in diameter and has a daylight sensor that lights it up at night and turns it off during the day.

Halloween Sound Activated Rocks – These are rocks that charge during the day, and at night light up with a “Go Back” or “Boo” (depending on the model). These rocks are about 9.5″ by 6″ by 4″. They also have a daylight sensor and are solar powered (of course).

Solar Powered Lighted Halloween Skull Decoration – This is basically the same as the smiling pumpkin, but a little bit bigger and in skull form.

Needless to say, they all come with the benefits that we have come to expect from all solar lighting products, like: ease of installation, energy efficiency, versatility, etc. Not to mention, most traditional lights need to be either turned on and off manually, or attached to a timer. All of these solar holiday lights come with daylight sensors. It doesn’t get more trouble free than that!

There are many more types and styles of solar holiday lights, but I hope I have helped to spark some ideas for you.

PostHeaderIcon 4 Thrifty Ideas to Have a Wonderful Christmas

This Christmas many parents are looking for the perfect gift to get their children. They also have to do it on a budget and still have enough left over for other holiday shopping musts. This can be challenging especially for families on reduced income. So how do you go about getting ready for the holidays when the money just doesn’t seem available? Here are some economical suggestions and tips to help you get ready for the holiday and still make it special.

Plan and Save. The sad fact is that many people and families don’t really quite know what a real budget or saving plan looks like. It normally is here are X amount of bills and here is X amount of money. How can you juggle the money to pay the more important bills? A real budget will give you a strategy to meet your daily expenses and still put aside a little bit for later. So the first thing to do is go over what you need to pay, what can be delayed until later, or even better payed in smaller pieces. This will give you a realistic view of what you can do. Then look at what you have paid in past Christmases. Looking at bank statements or credit card bills will help you with that. Line up what you expect to spend with what you earn and make the hard decisions. It might mean cutting back on some luxury in everyday expenses or replacing a holiday tradition with a cheaper alternative. The point is reconcile and then start a savings plan. If you need extra cash try to find small things you can do now in the fall to earn that extra saved income and keep it saved.

Look for savings in your holiday. There are often things that you pay for during the holiday that you don’t really need to pay for or you can replace with a cheaper alternative. For example it may mean using cheaper tree ornaments or making some holiday treats yourself. If you can find reasonable and doable alternatives you can help maintain the integrity of your Christmas and not lose a thing.

Shop smarter when looking for toys. There are countless ways to save money buying presents for your kids. Hopefully the cash you have saved will be some help. First, look in store publications and News for information on sales and price cuts on popular toys. Second, try to maximize the purchases for each child by setting a max amount. A great idea for younger kids is that Santa is giving kids the choice this year to get one extra special present or pick two or three smaller gifts. Try to explain it in a way your children can understand. Finally use non credit payment programs like layaway for toys you know your kids just “have” to have.

Try to get things the whole family can enjoy. To offset the extra toy, look for items that your entire family can enjoy. This can be a game, TV, or a computer. The criteria is that everyone will benefit. One great idea that all your younger children can enjoy for an affordable price is personalized letters from Santa. These are customized letters with info about your children and their wish list. This is great because your kids have their faith in Santa affirmed and you can deny that you were the one that got the gifts this year.
